Album Info:Most of the Chicago & Northwestern's lines in and around Wisconsin's capital city are a shell of their former selves thanks to abandonments by C&NW itself and later Union Pacific. WSOR leases from UP several branches that are stubs of these former main lines; to Reedsburg, Cottage Grove, and industries on the south side, and gamely keeps them alive. The former C&NW Monona Yard between E. Johnson Street and Commercial Avenue serves as the base of Madison area operations.

WAMX 4181 pauses before shoving back
Title:  WAMX 4181 pauses before shoving back
Description:  This train faked me out. I thought they were departing the yard so I started to drive down the Isthmus to set up for a runby, but they stopped and reversed after pulling about 20-25 cars over the Johnson St. crossing. After waiting for the traffic backup to clear, I pulled into the parking lot across Fordem. Fortunately they stopped again to line another switch. Unless you brought a stepladder, you have to hold the camera at arm's length and shoot blind thanks to the stupidly high fence they put up on the west side of the yard. This was the only snap that got the whole locomotive in it. Thank goodness for digital.

Title:  WAMX 3947 about to depart Johnson St. yard
Description:  The train has stopped, and two crew members have walked out into the street to direct traffic. The train will also use its horn at the normally "quiet" crossing, as the signals and gates aren't functioning for some reason.

WAMX 4172 crosses the Yahara Parkway bike path as L465 departs
Title:  WAMX 4172 crosses the Yahara Parkway bike path as L465 departs
Description:  When I was a kid, this was a street named Thornton Avenue, and the crossing had C&NW-era gated signals. A little over a decade ago, most of it was narrowed to a bike/pedestrian path and the crossing became passive (signs only). Then a couple of years ago, new gated signals were installed!

What's wrong with this picture?
Title:  What's wrong with this picture?
Description:  A series of pleasant April days with highs in the 60s and even 70s had the spring greenup nicely underway...then we were rudely slapped in the face with low 30s and snow on Saturday, April 27th! Fortunately, accumulations were minimal and generally not on the too-warm pavement. Still, what happened to the beautiful spring landscape I was shooting trains in just the day before?

Hurry Up and Wait
Title:  Hurry Up and Wait
Description:  Passed by the yard and saw 4188 and another SD40-2 idling on the main with a long train (probably a T006 for Janesville), lights on looking ready to roll. I quickly parked and set up, then stood here for over an hour with no sign of movement before I had to leave.

Title:  An unsual late afternoon-arriving T005's three motors take headroom on the north end of the yard
Description:  This was WSOR 4011, one of two ex-UP units acquired late in 2007. Crossing replacement at Blair/Wilson/Williamson/John Nolen (all one five-way cluster**** of a crossing) on the Isthmus resulted in this unusual late-afternoon appearance of the manifest up from Janesville.
