Album Info:This line branches off of the CP's ex-Milwaukee Road main line through Wisconsin (Tomah/Watertown Subdivisions) at Portage and runs south to an interchange with the WSOR at Madison. It was one of the few Milwaukee Road lines to Madison to not go up for abandonment in the 1980s, and thus followed the natural progression MILW-SOO-CP, without being bought by the state and operated by a short line at any point. It is served by a local based out of Portage, usually M-W-F as of the late 2010s.

Description:  The spreader crew had been doing ditching work along the line since the previous Tuesday. Heavy rain and mechanical problems slowed them down (they were supposed to be finished all the way to Madison by the previous Thursday) and this was my second failed attempt to catch them in action.

Description:  I'd been wanting to catch this unit since seeing a photo of it in Illinois on Flickr. It is one of not very many of these GP38ACs in the "Golden Beaver" scheme. I got my wish when it was assigned to Portage about six weeks ago and started appearing on this train, but it seemed like every time I got a heads up that it was leading, I had something else going on and couldn't catch it. Finally changed that today.

Description:  I would have liked to spend my afternoon chasing the (relatively) massive train along the branch line, but I had to finish my Christmas shopping. After getting out of the mall, I raced north on US Highway 51 for one more runby. After heavy snow just before Halloween and through much of early November, there's scarcely a trace on the ground and none in the forecast in time for a white Christmas this year.

The other end of the line is MP 32 in Madison, with an interchange track to the WSOR yard and a run-around siding. In 12 years of railfanning this line, I had never tried out any of the locations between Poynette and the Columbia Power Plant before.

Description:  It's not too common for CP's SD40-2s to make their way down the branch line to Madison (heck, widecab GEs are more common when the unit sand trains are running!). I'd never personally seen it before, the only photos in my collection of one are from my dad leading a flood detour in 2008. Four-axle power has been the rule on this local for decades.
