It's in there somewhere
Title:  It's in there somewhere
Description:  One rail of the former C&NW line through Plymouth is visible in the left foreground. The other rail is buried in the grass somewhere to the right. The north-south ex-MILW line (currently used by WSOR, in the upper right) and the east-west ex-C&NW run parallel to each other for a few blocks either side of the diamond in downtown Plymouth. WSOR has recently purchased the ex-C&NW from here eastward for future access to Sheboygan.

Disused ex-C&NW railroad crossing on Erie Street
Title:  Disused ex-C&NW railroad crossing on Erie Street
Description:  In the Third Ward. Summerfest grounds to the left, swing bridge over the Milwaukee River just out of the picture to the right. When the Chicago & Northwestern abandoned and removed their passenger mainline through downtown Milwaukee, 1-2 miles of track were kept at both ends for local freight service to industries. That industrial traffic has since dried up, and the remaining portions of the line have gone out of service, albeit still in place for now. The northern end runs from Wiscona to Hampton Avenue, with photos from February 2009 elsewhere in this album.

Crossing obliteration
Title:  Crossing obliteration
Description:  The Water Street crossing on what once was the Chicago and Northwestern's passenger mainline through downtown Milwaukee. The crossing has recently been removed, and the road repaved. The tracks in the background (protected by crossbucks) are industrial spurs that still get occasional use by UP's "Marsh Job" local.

Looking north at the former CNW Milwaukee River swing bridge
Title:  Looking north at the former CNW Milwaukee River swing bridge
Description:  Permanently open to river traffic now. The rails leading to the bridge dead end in the gravel pile before the crossing, and are hidden in the grass the rest of the way. At one time, all C&NW passenger trains between Chicago and points such as Fond du Lac and Green Bay passed through here.

Silent survivors
Title:  Silent survivors
Description:  Although the rails of the Water Street crossing on the former C&NW mainline have been removed, the crossing signals were not. They will never flash and ding for another train, though (unless removed and reinstalled at an active crossing). These venerable Safetran signals are fairly typical "second generation" crossing signals on the C&NW, and would have been installed to replace the original wigwags or Griswold rotating stop signs probably around the late 1970s to early '80s.

Disconnected rails looking north from Horicon Street (Highway 28)
Title:  Disconnected rails looking north from Horicon Street (Highway 28)
Description:  The ex-Milwaukee Road line between Iron Ridge and Fond du Lac was abandoned from the north side of Mayville to Fond du Lac in the early 1980s. Sometime in 2010, WSOR discontinued service to the United Co-Op on the north side of town, and removed the crossing at Highway 28. Now the last mile or so of track is cut off and inaccessible to rail traffic.
