UP 5547 is a bit of a surprise leading EB CP intermodal train 198
Title:  UP 5547 is a bit of a surprise leading EB CP intermodal train 198
Description:  Typically, the intermodals are about the only trains on this line where you WON'T find any sort of foreign power, other than the occasional leaser!

Title:  CP 8132 third out on 198 is my first sighting of an AC4400CWM
Description:  I went trackside this chilly April day on a report that another such unit was LEADING a train! These are rebuilds of some of the 9600-series AC4400s, in the reintroduced "Golden Beaver" scheme!

UP 9417 and another UP GE power WB CP train 471 crossing Weyh Rd.
Title:  UP 9417 and another UP GE power WB CP train 471 crossing Weyh Rd.
Description:  This unit and some of its compatriots received a facelift in spring 2015. Prior to that, the only Dash 8W with the "Wings and Flags" was 9448, which has since been retired along with most of the fleet. 9417 is one of only a few to remain.

A different kind of 12-axle special
Title:  A different kind of 12-axle special
Description:  A westbound light power move, running as symbol G67 (previously used for Watertown Sub locals, which would often match this axle count with two Geeps and one car) heading to pick up a sand train near Sparta.

Title:  CP 8572 follows 8553 west around the County Highway O curve
Description:  I heard the dispatcher telling this move that they would hold in Kilbourn Siding to meet eastbound manifest 280, which was the train I went out for.

AMTK 20 leads the eastbound 'Builder fresh from its station stop
Title:  AMTK 20 leads the eastbound 'Builder fresh from its station stop
Description:  In the early days of Amtrak, another train (the North Coast Hiawatha) also served this route, and Portage was a "whistle stop" for the Empire Builder. They would highball it if there were no passengers to board or de-train.

A five-headed 281 blasts west approaching Salisbury Road
Title:  A five-headed 281 blasts west approaching Salisbury Road
Description:  Ho-hum leader, but the 2nd through 4th units are quite interesting. It's relatively unusual to see BNSF power on this line, and when it does show up it's usually on unit trains of some sort. The 4th unit is BNSF 740, one of the only three 700-series Dash 9s delivered in HII paint instead of the red and silver "faux Warbonnet" with BNSF lettering.

CP 9538 West roars across Salisbury Road
Title:  CP 9538 West roars across Salisbury Road
Description:  The 9500s in the CP Rail "Dual Flags" scheme weathered even worse than the later "Golden Beaver" units. It looks like this one has received a touch-up on the cab side numbers, otherwise they would be as badly peeled as the nose "CP" and long hood logo. Its RCMP "Carrousel de la GRC" (Musical Ride) decal is also still legible, which can't be said for all of them.

Title:  And I thought the 8100s were clean!
Description:  In addition to the AC4400CWM program, CP has also begun rebuilding and renumbering some of its old standard cab SD40-2s, complete with a shiny red coat of the resurrected Golden Beaver scheme!

CP 5108, bright and shiny second out on 281
Title:  CP 5108, bright and shiny second out on 281
Description:  Notice the strobe lights, a feature which seemed to fall out of fashion on locomotives and would now appear to be making a comeback. My only slight complaint with these units is that they removed the Canadian-style bell between the numberboards, but left the empty mount. The units now have an e-bell in the standard, underframe location just ahead of the fuel tank on the conductor's side.

CP 8709 leads eastbound ethanol train 650
Title:  CP 8709 leads eastbound ethanol train 650
Description:  This is one of CP's first order of GEVOs, on the rails now since 2005. The nose was replaced following a fiery grade crossing accident with a propane truck at Callaway, MN in early 2016, thus why it looks much cleaner than the rest of the locomotive.

CSX 742 and two other CSX GEs idle on a WB unit covered hopper train
Title:  CSX 742 and two other CSX GEs idle on a WB unit covered hopper train
Description:  Not sure what commodity (phosphates, potash or grain). This sat in the Portage East siding all day, the locomotives were idling and would occasionally make whooshing air brake sounds, but I never heard any chatter about a crew for it.

CP 9375 is the sole head end unit on WB autorack/intermodal train 199
Title:  CP 9375 is the sole head end unit on WB autorack/intermodal train 199
Description:  As opposed to 8709 which we saw leading 650, this is one of CP's most recent batch of ES44ACs acquired with a build date of April 2012. It would appear to never have been washed during the ensuing six years on the rails, which is why I wanted to catch some of the recent 8100 series AC4400CWM rebuilds before they build up their CP standard layer of grime! An AC4400CW was DPU'ed midway back in the train. 198/199 are frequently all doublestack containers, but sometimes have some autoracks mixed in.

CP 9779 mid-train on 199
Title:  CP 9779 mid-train on 199
Description:  A typically dingy example of an unrebuilt Golden Beaver AC4400CW. Most of the rebuilds to AC4400CWM have come from the 9600 series. Not sure what the plans are for the CP Rail "Dual Flags" 9500s or the 8500-8600 and 9700-9800 series, most of which carry the Beaver scheme. Several were repainted to the logoless red/white lettering scheme following wreck damage while CP was using that, and a few more (such as 9817) have been repainted since they brought back the Beaver!
