michael carlisle General i know the answer. my grandfather worked for the railroad. they do that as a symbol to other rail workers. that the train will no longer run through that part of town. 4/9/2009 10:15:52 PM
Pat Miller General If this is right near an enbankment, this could be a form of reinforcement. I have seen situations where old rail was stuck vertically into solid ground or a hole with cement and then the embankment filled back in around it. Usually several strategically placed rails are used in this aplication. 6/22/2009 5:44:08 AM
