Beavers on the River
Title:  Beavers on the River
Description:  I was pleasantly surprised to find out that CP is giving at least a few of their SD40-2s the new Golden Beaver dip, along with PTC capability that makes them able to lead on U.S. mainlines once again. Also notice the DMVW car first up in the train, the previous day a westbound CP manifest had three ex-CN SD60Fs heading for service on that road.

About to duck under County M, westbound out of town
Title:  About to duck under County M, westbound out of town
Description:  Judging by the color of the rails in front of the train, there haven't been many (if any) runs to Lycon yet this year. The ready-mix plant is in the distance near top right; a segment of this ex-C&NW trackage was re-opened in fall 2014 after 18 years out of service so that WSOR could deliver aggregate loads for Lycon out of their yard in Madison. South (RR east) of the plant, cars are stored up to WSOR's end-of-track at Brooklyn. This L469 job is pulling 126 tanks.

Bonus BICB
Title:  Bonus BICB
Description:  I got a tip that this train was sitting here, waiting on the steam excursion to give up its track warrant just to the west. It consisted entirely of doublestack intermodal followed by a unit ethanol set (complete with buffer cars). Although the idea of GEVOs on a Class II still doesn't exactly sit well with me, the paint scheme looks good on them and they are rather clean compared to most of those belonging to the Class Is!

287 On The Pull
Title:  287 On The Pull
Description:  Following the crew change, they started rolling west on the main. Thinking they were blasting off, I hightailed it to a crossing west of town but waited over half an hour. They must have shoved in at Three Light to work the yard. The scanner was unusually quiet, I never heard them tone up the Wisconsin Dispatcher on 161.520 for signal indication. Also, normally if a westbound is going to work the yard it will either take the siding or cross over at the junction and go in from the east end.

Spic and Span
Title:  Spic and Span
Description:  As has been plainly evident since the first orders of rebuilds started hitting the rails in 2018, they accumulate dust and oil streaks quickly, so there's a very limited window of opportunity to get them looking like this! This may well be only the second revenue trip for 8209 and 8208, the first being the previous day's 288. Notice the dust/mud already apparent on the plow/undercarriage, although nothing above the sill stripe...yet. It also appears they didn't bother to paint the exhaust vents on this order, since it was getting cooked off within weeks.

Coming Through!
Title:  Coming Through!
Description:  The UP local out of Belvidere typically makes the trek up and down Madison Street just two days a week to switch out a few cars at a couple of customers in Loves Park. A portion of this ex-C&NW line, including this street running, is also used by a trolley car operated by the Rockford Park District. Its schedule is arranged so as to eliminate any possibility of conflict with a UP freight movement on this dark territory.

Surprise Sixties
Title:  Surprise Sixties
Description:  Well, not a TOTAL surprise since I knew this train was coming at this point, but I didn't when I left the house to get 6644 leading 651. I saw the Facebook heads ups about this one coming west after I arrived at Columbus, to my delight. Empty rock train 9WWA is going to Portage to lay over for the night, tomorrow morning it will head to the Michels Pit at Waterloo for loading. About ten years ago, CP began a rebuild program on their remaining ex-Soo Line SD60s. They were sent to CAD Rail in Montreal, rebuilt, repainted in the plain red with white text scheme, and renumbered with a "2" replacing the "0" in the second digit of the SOO number (6232 was 6032, etc). Then, beginning in 2017, ten were sent to NRE Silvis for rebuilding to "SD60-3." These were numbered 6300-6309. A few of them were among the handful that escaped the initial round of rebuilds and thus still wore their SOO paint and numbers until that time. Others were rebuilt twice in less than a decade, including 6308. The former SOO 6050 did a brief stint as CP 6250. Most (but not all) of the SD60-3s received the "Golden Beaver" scheme after it was re-introduced late in 2017.

CP 6644 (D-Day Commemorative Unit) West, empty ethanol train 651
Title:  CP 6644 (D-Day Commemorative Unit) West, empty ethanol train 651
Description:  Birdsey St. at 1512. The number is a reference to the date of "D-Day" (for those who slept through history class, the day the Allies landed at Normandy in occupied France, generally considered the turning point of World War II in Europe), June 6, 1944. The paint scheme is based on that of the RCAF "Spitfire" planes used there. For the commemorative numbering, this engine was moved from its ordinary roster position of 7024. The other four military tribute SD70ACUs are numbered normally 7020-23. The next unit, 7025, and up are in the standard red paint with Golden Beaver logo.
