Album Info:Union Pacific's ex-C&NW mainline from the state line (in Illinois it serves as the Metra Northwest line) to South Janesville Yard. In C&NW days this was part of a through line to Madison via Evansville, and on to Reedsburg and the Twin Cities. The state line to Janesville segment was busy for a time, but experienced a drastic dropoff in traffic with the late 2008 closure of the GM plant and subsequent collapse of Janesville's industrial sector. From their Janesville yard, UP's local also runs down a portion of the old Milwaukee Road Racine & Southwestern line from Clinton to Beloit, where they use trackage rights over a portion of the CP to reach customers in South Beloit, IL on a severed piece of C&NW's Harvard-Beloit-Madison line.

Description:  A crew has just boarded this GE trio at the head end of a string of loads from Evansville, and will eventually take it on to Proviso. However, the third unit needs some attention, so first they will cut the power off, run it ahead of the lead switch, and back into the yard. It will be nearly dark by the time they actually depart. The other GE off to the right, coupled nose-in, is stored. I can't make out the number due to depth of field but the first two digits appear to be "98," placing it in the roster of ex-C&NW Dash 9s.

Title:  Leading From Behind
Description:  A crew still occupied the cab of 1166, and its ditch lights were left on, as it trailed the move from Clinton to Janesville. Although it no longer wears the paint scheme as 1158 on the other end of the train still does, it too is an ex-St. Louis Southwestern (Cotton Belt) GP60. It was built as the SSW 9673 which, coincidentally, is pictured on the Wikipedia articles for the SSW Railway and for the GP60 itself.

Description:  Not sure why the speeds were reduced as the track still appears to be in good condition (and the ABS signals were recently upgraded, replacing the searchlights that C&NW had installed after scavenging them from an ex-CGW line that was being abandoned), but in years past you had to drive like a bat out of hell just to barely get a grab shot of a train entering the yard if you also shot it leaving Clinton. No longer.

Description:  The GP60s were built for fast, long-haul running with their high horsepower to axle ratio. It's kind of sad to see them relegated to 10 MPH branchline local service, but at least they'll get to stretch their wheels a little bit on the LJA50 run from here to Proviso and back.
