Brown Stick Season and Stick Rail
Title:  Brown Stick Season and Stick Rail
Description:  It has been a relatively pleasant March by Wisconsin standards, but we've still got another month or so before the trees start to leaf out in earnest. This is UP LTA-41, trundling along the ancient ex-C&NW jointed rail of the Winona Subdivision between Wyeville and Tunnel City. It's down to a once-weekly extra board job out of Adams (eastbound counterpart LTA-42 runs on Fridays).

UP 1917 West, LTA-41
Title:  UP 1917 West, LTA-41
Description:  Lagrange Avenue at 1357. This unit was built as UP 3342, and retains its distinctive elongated or "snoot nose" short hood following its rebuild to SD40N.

County Highway ET Bridge
Title:  County Highway ET Bridge
Description:  Here we get a nice broadside clearly showing 1917/ex-3342's snoot nose in profile.

Waiting
Title:  Waiting
Description:  The C&NW's Adams-Winona, MN line and Milwaukee Road's (later SOO/CP's) Chicago-Twin Cities line ran in close proximity from here to just east of La Crosse. In 1973, C&NW's tunnel collapsed and they soon abandoned their line west of there, and obtained trackage rights over the Milwaukee Road to access Winona. That arrangement continues to this day with UP and CP. Here LTA-41 must wait for eastbound CP train 470 before entering the single-track Tomah Sub.

Wasting No Time
Title:  Wasting No Time
Description:  Before 470's tail end had even cleared the switch, LTA-41 was on the move toward the junction with the Tomah Sub. Just beyond the junction point and the signal ahead of the train is the east portal of the tunnel, frustratingly JUST out of reach of being shootable from public property. With the leaves off the trees, I could just barely glimpse it from Flag Avenue.

New Route, Same Destination
Title:  New Route, Same Destination
Description:  Well, not exactly new. C&NW and now UP trains have been utilizing the Milwaukee Road/SOO/CP line from Tunnel City to access Winona, MN for nearly fifty nears now, since C&NW's tunnel collapsed in the early 1970s. The embankment carrying the abandoned C&NW right-of-way is plainly visible in the left background.
