I'd been wanting to catch this unit since seeing a photo of it in Illinois on Flickr. It is one of not very many of these GP38ACs in the "Golden Beaver" scheme. I got my wish when it was assigned to Portage about six weeks ago and started appearing on this train, but it seemed like every time I got a heads up that it was leading, I had something else going on and couldn't catch it. Finally changed that today. |

I would have liked to spend my afternoon chasing the (relatively) massive train along the branch line, but I had to finish my Christmas shopping. After getting out of the mall, I raced north on US Highway 51 for one more runby. After heavy snow just before Halloween and through much of early November, there's scarcely a trace on the ground and none in the forecast in time for a white Christmas this year. |

...as measured from the split with the Chicago-Twin Cities main at Portage. The other end of the line is MP 32 in Madison, with an interchange track to the WSOR yard and a run-around siding. In 12 years of railfanning this line, I had never tried out any of the locations between Poynette and the Columbia Power Plant before. |

They've spent almost three hours switching here, and still have a few more moves to make before getting rolling south again. About a year after it was last in Portage and assigned to this job, 3002 has once again popped up after the train was the near-exclusive domain of the GP20C-ECOs throughout the spring, summer and fall. |
