G64 grabs a loaded centerbeam from the WSOR yard
Title:  G64 grabs a loaded centerbeam from the WSOR yard
Description:  I ran over here after work in the hope of getting it coming south with 3000 leading, but alas was too late. In the background and partially covered by 2273, the WSOR T007 crew is ready to go to work with the 4185.

Title:  A monster M&P Sub run of the G64 winds its way through the Cherokee Marsh
Description:  The north (timetable west)-bound train is 65 cars after picking up a big cut of sand empties at Madison, and warrants three units which this line seldom does anymore!

CP 3002 on the point of the northbound G64
Title:  CP 3002 on the point of the northbound G64
Description:  I'd been wanting to catch this unit since seeing a photo of it in Illinois on Flickr. It is one of not very many of these GP38ACs in the "Golden Beaver" scheme. I got my wish when it was assigned to Portage about six weeks ago and started appearing on this train, but it seemed like every time I got a heads up that it was leading, I had something else going on and couldn't catch it. Finally changed that today.

G64 crosses Bilkie Road in the deepening dusk of one of the shortest days of the year
Title:  G64 crosses Bilkie Road in the deepening dusk of one of the shortest days of the year
Description:  I would have liked to spend my afternoon chasing the (relatively) massive train along the branch line, but I had to finish my Christmas shopping. After getting out of the mall, I raced north on US Highway 51 for one more runby. After heavy snow just before Halloween and through much of early November, there's scarcely a trace on the ground and none in the forecast in time for a white Christmas this year.

Milepost Eight
Title:  Milepost Eight
Description:  ...as measured from the split with the Chicago-Twin Cities main at Portage. The other end of the line is MP 32 in Madison, with an interchange track to the WSOR yard and a run-around siding. In 12 years of railfanning this line, I had never tried out any of the locations between Poynette and the Columbia Power Plant before.

G64 emerges from the industrial park lead
Title:  G64 emerges from the industrial park lead
Description:  They've spent almost three hours switching here, and still have a few more moves to make before getting rolling south again. About a year after it was last in Portage and assigned to this job, 3002 has once again popped up after the train was the near-exclusive domain of the GP20C-ECOs throughout the spring, summer and fall.

Title:  Shoving into another one of the Capitol Warehousing spurs
Description:  3002 is one of a handful of the 3000-series GP38ACs and GP38-2s to receive the "Golden Beaver" scheme. Most of them were in the old "Action Red" (with or without the Multimark) until the past decade, when they received the then-current logoless red with white "CANADIAN PACIFIC" lettering.

Title:  All the colors are represented in the yard today
Description:  3015 wears current owner Canadian Pacific's classic Action Red / Multimark scheme. 2010 remains in Milwaukee Road orange, patched by MILW successor and CP predecessor Soo Line. SOO is also represented by GP38-2s 4401 and 4449 in their traditional red and white scheme. On the far left is MP15AC CP 1447, in a newer CP scheme.

CP 3017 leads a light power G64 as it arrives in the CP yard
Title:  CP 3017 leads a light power G64 as it arrives in the CP yard
Description:  Last Friday I grumbled that this unit wasn't leading southbound, and it was dark by the time they departed back north for Portage. Well, the power set was wyed sometime in the intervening week, so I got my wish! This time the local is light engine and will pick up a few cars off the WSOR interchange. There's also a string of over 100 sand empties for interchange to CP sitting in their yard, but this crew will leave those be. They were eventually picked up by a solo AC4400CW which came down on Sunday the 9th.

Description:  CP's brief appearances on the Northside are the only non-WSOR trains that operate in Madison. MILW sucessor Soo Line used to operate the branch to Sun Prairie/Waterloo as well as across town to Middleton, but ceded more and more of that service to WSOR over the years.

Description:  Over the last decade, more and more of the WSOR's crossings that pass through downtown Madison and the residential areas on the east side have been made "quiet" (no horn) zones. Not so for the CP crossings, even though the line passes in close proximity to quite a few houses between Packers Avenue and Aberg Avenue.
