Ballast power rolls across Dayton Street
Title:  Ballast power rolls across Dayton Street
Description:  8WWA-24 has just cut off from their string of loads from the "Pit" just outside of Waterloo. Apparently the plan was to wye the power, which would have been a major bummer for me since I had gone after this train in the hope of chasing the SD60-3 leading back to Portage.

Coupled Up
Title:  Coupled Up
Description:  Ready to pull the loaded ballast train around the tightly curving west leg of the wye. Due to the overcast, I decided to try the view from the north side of the tracks, so of course the sun promptly peeked out. Not for long, though.

Entering home rails
Title:  Entering home rails
Description:  Leaving trackage rights over WSOR's Waterloo Sub, which CP acquired in 1998 after they sold the line to WSOR in order to retain access to the "Michels Pit" ballast transload site. 6302 is one of the first of the ten "SD60-3"rebuilds done at NRE Silvis, completed just before the "Golden Beaver" paint scheme was reintroduced late in 2017.

Rockin'
Title:  Rockin'
Description:  Westbound intermodal/autorack train 199 running ahead of this train got bit by the MP 159.9 detector and had to come to a stop on the single track, forcing this train to drag their feet and allowing me to get ahead of them.

CP 6302
Title:  CP 6302
Description:  Of the ten NRE Silvis SD60-3 rebuilds released starting in late 2017, 6300-02 were painted just prior to the reintroduction of the "Golden Beaver." This site has the wrong serial # in for this unit, placing this as ex-SOO 6036/CAD Rail rebuild CP 6236, which I personally have seen still on the rails after 2017. This is actually ex-SOO 6035, one of the nine that escaped the round of CAD Rail rebuilds.

CP 6306 leads a four-pack on 281
Title:  CP 6306 leads a four-pack on 281
Description:  Not only is the leader one of the items I had yet to check off my bucket list (a Beaver-painted rebuilt ex-Soo Line SD60), it has become unusual to see four locomotives at the head end of a manifest with the widespread adoption of distributed power operations.

281 motors out of town hot on 587's heels, 51x51 with four on the front
Title:  281 motors out of town hot on 587's heels, 51x51 with four on the front
Description:  Pre-departure counts to the dispatcher were 51 loads, 51 empties. I was a little annoyed that between the wait for 288 and 587 to get out of the way, and an unexpected bank of low clouds obscuring the setting sun, I didn't get my anticipated sweet golden light shot of this.

Surprise Sixties
Title:  Surprise Sixties
Description:  Well, not a TOTAL surprise since I knew this train was coming at this point, but I didn't when I left the house to get 6644 leading 651. I saw the Facebook heads ups about this one coming west after I arrived at Columbus, to my delight. Empty rock train 9WWA is going to Portage to lay over for the night, tomorrow morning it will head to the Michels Pit at Waterloo for loading. About ten years ago, CP began a rebuild program on their remaining ex-Soo Line SD60s. They were sent to CAD Rail in Montreal, rebuilt, repainted in the plain red with white text scheme, and renumbered with a "2" replacing the "0" in the second digit of the SOO number (6232 was 6032, etc). Then, beginning in 2017, ten were sent to NRE Silvis for rebuilding to "SD60-3." These were numbered 6300-6309. A few of them were among the handful that escaped the initial round of rebuilds and thus still wore their SOO paint and numbers until that time. Others were rebuilt twice in less than a decade, including 6308. The former SOO 6050 did a brief stint as CP 6250. Most (but not all) of the SD60-3s received the "Golden Beaver" scheme after it was re-introduced late in 2017.

Lining the switch for 9WWA to enter the yard
Title:  Lining the switch for 9WWA to enter the yard
Description:  The empty train made great time and despite being neck-and-neck with them on Highway 16 by Wyocena I wasn't able to beat them to Popenfus' with enough time to set up. It was only due to their having to stop to line this switch, and my knowledge of the back roads of Portage, that I was able to get these shots.

CP 6308 in the yard
Title:  CP 6308 in the yard
Description:  A WWA (work train) crew has boarded. Per scanner chatter, I think they later ran it light east to the Michels Pit at Waterloo to collect a loaded ballast train.
