Columbus & Greenville Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton AS416 No. 606 "City of Moorhead" |
Description: |
Most of the legacy steam builders struggled to adapt to the diesel transition in the face of competition from EMD. Baldwin was one of the earliest casualties; they merged with Lima-Hamilton in a last ditch effort in 1950, only to exit the locomotive market in 1956. The AS416 was one of their few offerings in the soon-to-be dominant "road switcher" style, but up against similar models from EMD, ALCo and Fairbanks-Morse it sold only 25 units of which this is one of only two preserved. |
