GEs crossing Fur Farm
Title:  GEs crossing Fur Farm
Description:  For this unremarkable CP freight on an overcast day, I tried out a new location. I'm standing along Grant Street, which runs into the west edge of Doylestown. A high embankment here makes for kind of a neat shot of eastbounds, although this angle wouldn't work on a clear afternoon as it would be into the sun. To the right (west) is the Fur Farm Road crossing, which despite being a narrow country lane has gated signals with L.E.D. lights and an e-bell. Just out of picture to the left (east) is the MP 159.9 defect detector.

CP 8200, distributed power on 199-02
Title:  CP 8200, distributed power on 199-02
Description:  The unit was about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way back in the train. It's one of the fourth and most recent order of AC4400CWM rebuilds to emerge from GE Fort Worth, but is already beginning to cover its fresh "Golden Beaver" scheme with streaks of oil. This unit was rebuilt from AC4400CW CP 9550.

About Time!
Title:  About Time!
Description:  This is what I was out for on this dreary "spring" day. After missing it on two prior runs across Wisconsin since the previous Sunday, I finally got to catch CP's business train with their FP9s as it deadheaded back to Canada.

"We're a huge train...but I'll do my best!"
Title:  "We're a huge train...but I'll do my best!"
Description:  This was 199's engineer's response to the dispatcher's request, on 199's way out of Portage, to try and make Mile Creek Siding (bypassing Lewiston and Kilbourn) ahead of Amtrak 7, the westbound Empire Builder which would be reaching its Portage stop in a few minutes. 199 had been running just ahead of the deadheading OCS train all afternoon, that would be held at Three Light in Portage for 7 to get by.

Amtrak 7 winds through the Bowman Road curves
Title:  Amtrak 7 winds through the Bowman Road curves
Description:  The westbound 'Builder had to drag its heels a bit between Portage and the Dells due to 199 running in the block ahead (not sure why the DS didn't put him in at Lewiston instead). They had also overtaken the deadheading OCS at Three Light. Ironically, 7 would soon hold at Tomah while the police were called to evict an unruly passenger, likely delaying the two trains it had just gotten ahead of.

F Unit in Your Face
Title:  F Unit in Your Face
Description:  The deadheading OCS snakes through the curve-and-dip at Bowman Road in the Wisconsin Dells, one of my favorite locations for westbounds on the Tomah Sub. This angle nicely conceals the GP20C-ECO which stuck out like a sore thumb between the two FP9As, as the B-unit is currently shopped. 21st-century railfans may foam over seeing a CP GMD unit still in a weatherbeaten "Dual Flags" or "Multimark (Pac-Man)" scheme, but here is the ORIGINAL CP paint scheme! However 1401 is not an original CP F unit, having been built, ironically, for main competitor CN before serving with VIA Rail, then Nebkota Railway in the US before being acquired by CP in 1998.

Deadheading CP OCS leans into the Bowman Rd. curves
Title:  Deadheading CP OCS leans into the Bowman Rd. curves
Description:  Sharp looking train, although that ECO in the middle is a bit of an eyesore. For some reason they decided that the two FP9As wouldn't do on their own.

CP 4599 trundles through town on the point of a westbound weed spraying train
Title:  CP 4599 trundles through town on the point of a westbound weed spraying train
Description:  This is a one-of-a-kind unit. It was one of only two GP39-2s on the Soo Line roster. The other, 4598, still carries its Soo Line paint and reporting marks. I caught that on the M&P earlier this year. This train was restricted to 25 MPH to do its work along the line.

FXE 2046 and CP 5996 complete 2WWA-03's stellar EMD lashup
Title:  FXE 2046 and CP 5996 complete 2WWA-03's stellar EMD lashup
Description:  While their large, modern widecab units occasionally show up leading trains on both the UP and CP in Wisconsin, I never expected to see a Ferromex standard cab Geep! They would wye this unit at Portage and have it haul the train solo west from there on the following day.

CP 5996 is part of an endangered species
Title:  CP 5996 is part of an endangered species
Description:  CP's GMD(London, Ont.)-built SD40-2s have become quite rare over the last few years. They are most commonly found on work trains such as this, or the ballast trains I caught about a year ago, and the rail train this past January. Once in a blue moon one will still show up on a manifest.

AMTK 22 leads 130 on No. 8 approaching its station stop
Title:  AMTK 22 leads 130 on No. 8 approaching its station stop
Description:  The eastbound Empire Builder is, as per usual, over an hour behind schedule. By its standards that's actually not too bad. I'm two in a row on catching this train, at this location, with a heritage unit trail fail.

Weed sprayer train 2WWA-03 ambles toward the Seier Road underpass
Title:  Weed sprayer train 2WWA-03 ambles toward the Seier Road underpass
Description:  Despite waiting around a few more minutes at Columbus to catch Amtrak #8, I had ample time to get set up for this shot only about seven miles to the west. The weed sprayer train was limited to 25 MPH, and is slowing to a stop anyway to meet two at Dodge West.

Meet at Dodge West, Take 2
Title:  Meet at Dodge West, Take 2
Description:  After 382 cleared the switch at Dodge West, the weed sprayer train still had a red signal. Meanwhile the intermediate signal to my east, red while 382 remained in the block it protected; eventually turned yellow, then green. In a few more minutes I heard another GEVO horn off to the west...

The weed sprayer does its job approaching Williams Road
Title:  The weed sprayer does its job approaching Williams Road
Description:  The train is passing "Rio East," a short manual-throw siding that is primarily used as an escape hatch for MoW gangs on the single track between Dodge West and Wyocena. Although, this is one of the few trains that could fit in it if necessary! About five years ago I saw the TEC train use it to meet opposing traffic.
