C&O 2707 hidden behind a crane boom
Title:  C&O 2707 hidden behind a crane boom
Description:  Pity what is in my opinion one of the most interesting of the unrestored steam locomotives in IRM's collection was so poorly situated for a shot. It is one of twelve of C&O's K-4 class "Kanawha" locomotives preserved.

Description:  Many years before the "Kodachrome" scheme, lol. "Santa Fe" was the nickname for the 2-10-2 type locomotives since they were the first railroad to use it.

WC 7525 rolls up to the Central Pavilion
Title:  WC 7525 rolls up to the Central Pavilion
Description:  The preserved WCL OLS SD45 was the Take the Throttle unit for the first half of the day on Sunday; it would later be moved to Coach Train service, and then triplehead with C&NW 6847/7009 for the final departure of the day.

CNW 7009 is the star of Diesel Days 2023
Title:  CNW 7009 is the star of Diesel Days 2023
Description:  ...for me, at least. This is one of the newest additions to the IRM collection; rescued from the NRE boneyard at Silvis, IL in the late fall of 2022. It was quickly returned to operational condition, with some touch-ups to the paint and the application of new cab-side heralds and a C&NW-appropriate 3-chime Leslie horn. Some say the SD50 isn't worth preserving because it was a relative lemon of a unit from EMD. I vehemently disagree, first off the fact that this unit survived for so long in C&NW colors without being repainted alone makes it worth preserving, second it makes a worthy partner with the 6847 in recreating the ubiquitous multi-unit EMD lashups that diesel-era C&NW railfans remember from the early 1980s through the falling of the flag in the mid-'90s.

CNW 7009 ready for the 12:20 departure of the Coach Train
Title:  CNW 7009 ready for the 12:20 departure of the Coach Train
Description:  While IRM has a really neat operation, early 20th century varnish looks really out of place behind mid-to-late century diesel locomotives. I'd really like to see them do a "c. 1980" C&NW photo freight with these locomotives one year.

Columbus & Greenville Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton AS416 No. 606 "City of Moorhead"
Title:  Columbus & Greenville Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton AS416 No. 606 "City of Moorhead"
Description:  Most of the legacy steam builders struggled to adapt to the diesel transition in the face of competition from EMD. Baldwin was one of the earliest casualties; they merged with Lima-Hamilton in a last ditch effort in 1950, only to exit the locomotive market in 1956. The AS416 was one of their few offerings in the soon-to-be dominant "road switcher" style, but up against similar models from EMD, ALCo and Fairbanks-Morse it sold only 25 units of which this is one of only two preserved.

ATSF 543, one of just three F-M H-12-44TS' built and the only one preserved
Title:  ATSF 543, one of just three F-M H-12-44TS' built and the only one preserved
Description:  This was a modified version of Fairbanks-Morse's popular H12-44 switchers. It had an extended frame and a short hood which housed a steam generator. They were ordered by Santa Fe specifically to serve as station pilots at Dearborn Station in Chicago.

Inspecting the prime mover of CNW 1689 before visitors can "take the throttle"
Title:  Inspecting the prime mover of CNW 1689 before visitors can "take the throttle"
Description:  This locomotive swapped in for WC 7525 on the northern or "main line" (Central Pavilion to Jefferson Street) route of the "Take the Throttle" event, where ticketholders can operate the locomotive. Meanwhile, 7525 was brought over to power the last few departures of the "Coach Train" (consisting of early 20th century varnish), including triple-heading with C&NW 7009/6847 on the final run of the day.

WC 7525 couples up to the Coach Train for a few Sunday afternoon runs
Title:  WC 7525 couples up to the Coach Train for a few Sunday afternoon runs
Description:  Wisconsin Central LTD was formed in 1987 amid large-scale changes in the face of upper Midwest railroading; it took over operations on mostly ex-Soo Line trackage that that railroad spun off in the wake of its acquisition of the Milwaukee Road. Through the late 1980s into the '90s the cornerstone of its roster became a fleet of well over 100 secondhand SD45s mostly of ATSF and BN lineage. Eventually painted into the road's handsome maroon and gold scheme, they became favorite "catches" among area railfans. However, upon the 2001 acquisition of WCL by CN, the 3,600 HP, 20-cylinder behemoths quickly fell out of favor and were retired c. 2005-'06. 7525, one of two in a special Operation Lifesaver scheme, was earmarked for preservation at IRM. A few others found second (or technically third) careers with other shortlines, but most languished at the various NRE boneyards, slowly being stripped of all useful parts before scrapping.

Almost looks like it could be...
Title:  Almost looks like it could be...
Description:  ...a power set found idling outside any yard office in towns across Illinois and Iowa in the 1980s. Just a few subtle clues give it away, like the ditch lights on 6847, missing rear numberboards on 7009 and the cab heralds that look too good for the rest of the paint.

GBW 2407, ALCo RSD15 "Gator"
Title:  GBW 2407, ALCo RSD15 "Gator"
Description:  The Green Bay & Western, a diesel era all-ALCo road to the bitter end, acquired six ex-Santa Fe RSD15s by way of FRVR/LS&I in 1990. They were never used by the railroad and just sat outside their Norwood shops in Green Bay until sometime in 1994 or so. The 2407, built 1960 as ATSF 841, was lucky enough to find its way into preservation.
